1963 Lotus Elite Type 14; chassis #1794 74.25 cu in. 1216cc Coventry Climax engine, ZF transmission Monocoque fiberglass chassis and body, 1375 Ibs Purchased by Bob Carnall in mid-60's after a race wreck as his dream car. Full "rotisserie" restoration completed in 2001 Currently owned by local Family on consignment. Approximately 1050 Elite Type 14's were manufactured between 1959 and 1963. The cars achieved 6 class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in addition to many other successes. Car was built for import to US for Bob Challam, Ecurie Shirlee Corporation (sole US importer based in Manhattan Beach CA) 9/19/1962 Lotus handwritten records indicate it is engine # 10767 however the actual block is 10769 which is a factory number. It is not uncommon to have errors with the Lotus records from those days according to Mike Strove who is the preeminent Lotus expert (currently resides outside San Francisco). Robert Carnell acquired the car in 1965 Reviewing the records indicated the following work was performed: 1/89 Engine rebuilt, front and rear suspension, electrical rewired for US 3/90 Gas tank replaced 8/93 Wheels rebuilt, new tires, rubber moldings replaced Full body off restoration started in 1999 and completed in 2003 (Lotus Prepared by Claudias performed the majority of the restoration, www.lotuspbc.com (http://www.lotuspbc.com/)) 7/99 Interior parts, brake lines replaced, rebuild carbs 10/00 Instruments 10/01 Body painted 1/03 Assemble car after painting 4/07 Brakes, exhaust and electrical 5/07 New windshield and rear glass 7/08 Tune carbs 12/10 Brake pads 9/11 Align doors, tune, relocate fuel pump, safety inspection (Invoice indicates 62 miles) Car was garaged in San Diego county on supports with gas drained 12/24 Bob Carnell passed and Susan Carnell Adams (daughter) became the caretaker. 1/25 All fluids flushed and replaced, brake lines bled, engine manually turned over and lubricated, battery replaced 2/25 Car driven to and shown at Dr George show. The only Lotus Elite at the show. 1/26 ~300 miles on the speedometer. Driven locally to ensure the car operates. 60 years in the same family. |
